The words ‘opinion polling are used to describe survey research which is intended for publication in the media, or for use by politicians, parties and political candidates. Sometimes the word poll’ often implies that the research is not conducted as marketing research. Public opinion polling and research are widely used in many countries throughout the world to know about peoples’ perceptions and their preference. To some people, opinion polls’ are seen as somehow less serious than ‘social’ or ‘public policy’ research. In reality opinion polling often requires a degree of accuracy not provided by much marketing research.
Therefore, opinion polls are just one application of survey research. However, they measure much more than just opinions. They measure knowledge, perception, behavior, future intentions, motivation, salience and preferences.
